Adiponectin improves overall insulin sensitivity and maintains energy homeostasis by various mechanisms, including direct and indirect improvement of insulin responsiveness in major insulin targets, suppression of inflammation and oxidative stress, and promotion of β cell survival. The altered secretory profiles of adiponectin targets, including adipokines, myokines, and hepatokines, and immune cell-derived factors mediate the indirect effects of adiponectin, thereby amplifying its insulinsensitizing activities. The extent to which these different mechanisms operate depends on cell type and physiological and pathophysiological settings. See pages 91–92 by Ruan and Liu for details.
